I just realized today that I haven't posted a blog all winter... Maybe some people wonder if I died? Or maybe just hate Lillooet and never leave my house? Well the truth is I discovered ski touring and have been doing that rather than typing. I have to say that touring is one of the most fun sports I have ever taken up. Its like being able to hike with ease in the winter with a fun and speedy ride down. You can cover huge distance in less time and see the mountains in all their true glory, blanketed in snow. |
Learning has been very challenging since I haven't skied since early childhood, but I figure I have given those that watch me suffer a good laugh. I have found that taking lessons and hitting the local groomers has made things much easier. Just like anything, practise makes perfect. Learning in the backcountry is extremely challenging with changing snow conditions. This sport also carries a lot of risk. You are headed out in the backcountry where the potential of an avalanche is real. Having the gear, knowing how to use it, and practising is key to survival. Darryl and I have gone out just to practise burying and finding beacons with a timer running. I have minimal experience surveying the land so I go out with locals with much more knowledge then I, and always ensure to check the avalanche rating before heading out. Next year I would like to take AST 1. I am not going to post trip reports of the specific locations because the people that take me out would probably have to kill me. As well, its nice to make some fresh turns in spots that are rarely visited. However, I will post pictures and say that the Lillooet area has some wicked terrain. I will also say that ski touring is good fun, but also hard work! Just like mountain biking you climb for hours sometimes for mere minutes of descent.
