We left Langford at around 0740 and made our way passed Jordan River to Jordan Main. This time I was able to drive much farther up the road and it helped that I was slightly familiar with the area. We headed up passed the turnoff for the road to the Kludahk trailhead (which is not drivable right now) and parked another kilometre or so higher to shorten our walk. By the time we had our snowshoes strapped on and were headed on our way it was 0915.
The snow was hard and crunchy as we made our way up the road. It wasn't quite as pretty as the last time I came since the snow had melted off of most of the trees. However, the weather was phenomenal and there wasn't a cloud in sight. We headed up in the same direction Lauren and I had a couple weeks previous on logging roads headed for the San Juan Summit and my guess at the location of the Tower Cabin. I was using my GPS as a guide for which I found a good track from the link mentioned in my previous blog entry on this spot. The area we were walking through was heavily logged, but still looked pretty covered in glistening snow.
It didn't take long to reach the top of the road and pass the spot Lauren and I had turned around. Getting to drive farther up the road made a big difference. I was very excited to be exploring new turf! Once we hit the top of the road I could see a pretty obvious path made by other's snowshoers. We followed it up into a largish stand of timber as I eyed the GPS. After only a few minutes we saw signs! We hit the jackpot! Through the trees Trevor pointed out a large radio tower up above us. We headed up to the summit of the ridge and were met with a beautiful view of the valley unfolding below us to the north. I also spotted the Tower Cabin. |
The Tower Cabin was pretty neat. One of the most luxurious backcountry cabins I have seen. As Trevor stated, it was almost too good for a hiking trip! There was a beautiful wood stove craftily suited with a grate for cooking. Also, a big table and chairs for eating and playing the numerous board games stacked on the shelves. Upstairs there was big loft with foam mattresses to sleep. Best of all, there was a full little kitchen complete with a stove and oven. Let me tell you if you plan on staying here you better be donating at least $20 a night! It is very obvious to see the love and devotion the Kludahk Outdoor Club has put into these cabins. |
Now I haven't been through the whole Kludahk Trail, but I have to say that this hut must be the coolest! It is perched high up on the ridge and has a phenomenal view as seen above. It is also filled with a wealth of information on the local geography, wildlife, flora/fauna, and history. Not to mention a heater, stove, and a multitude of tea. I could have spent much more time here given the chance! |
After a quick look around and a snack Trevor and I hit the trail back to the truck. The snow was much softer now, which made for easier travel. It seemed to take no time at all to hit our turn off the trail, and we descended down to a logging spur road. The sun was warm and bright, and I started to over heat as we made our way back. I can't believe that I hiked most of the day in just a couple tech jerseys. |
Here is my GPS track for the trip :
